On the subject of things we can use at under 512KB.  There is ELKS,
a version of linux hacked for the 8086.  A mininimal compile is only
32KB.  And for about 64KB you can have a functional system, and this
is before compression.  It's not awesome but it is an option.

In truth I want to compare notes and see if I can find the bloat in
the normal linux kernel, and something with a very similiar source
tree that is noticeable smaller looks like a step in the right
direction.
