There is actually a specific tool for that.  I actually have what I think
was originally a dentists tool for cleaning teeth, that I'm using.  The long
handle actually makes it a little nicer the dedicated tool for swapping roms.

It sounds like the correct board.  I do know all I have seen is a PLCC part.
Any PLCC part you can get a linux MTD driver for should be fine.  The
socket supports a 512KB part.
