I think you are hitting the wrong bit. I will try to email you a
known-good patch later today or tomorrow. It is an extension to my
power-reset patch for the kernel. This patch works for every piix4e-based
system I have.

No. It will try to drop to 16-bit mode and run kernel setup.  try running
monte with the -s option. This will skip 16-bit setup.
