CF cards will take some time at startup to read the information off the flash and work out where all the blocks are. Their internal microcontroller will need to do the equivalent of the stuff in drivers/mtd/nftlmount.c. That may take a non-negligible amount of time, and it probably won't want to be attempting to respond to requests in that time. -- dwmw2
