my own private hacked copy of etherboot works. But the latest 5.0.6 fails
on the rtl8139.

I think this is another bus-master dma issue, where the etherboot driver
doesn't quite get that bit set and nobody has noticed it yet. I'm not
sure. I'll check some more monday.

This is the part of the note where I once again express my preference for
using linux as the bootloader. I need to make it a macro :-)
