What is basically comes down to is this.

So far only etherboot has shown to be generally viable.

Using kernels has been shown to work, but the massive increase in size
keeps it from being a general solution. And it is the core of the
kernel that is the problem. There are driver size differences but we
haven't gotten down to those yet.

Because etherboot has a seperate driver base the set of supported
hardware is different than the Linux kernel. Occasionally the
etherboot driver is more stable, occassionally the Linux driver works
better.

But it is time to come up with some real choices besides booting off
of the network.
