It won't. That version of login can be run w/ or w/o shadow.

I'd say, you should better keep those encoded password stream from being 
transmitted through network, or we may try to dictionary your passwords.. 
:Q Your password file seems quite reasonable to me. While /bin/sh is 
valid and executable, even /home/pluimers.com doesn't exist, you could 
still login with that account.

I've tried the same configuration (pluimers.com:x:504:100...) on my linux 
box, and it works.
