I understand your confusion, the thing is that redhat by default use a
special redhatppp module in linuxconf, while all the answers you have
recived are concerning the "native" linuxconf ppp dialout module, which
is preferred for non redhat users (I prefer it on redhat too, you may
enable the "dialout" module in linuxconf to activate it)

So, the profilenames are used in the "dialout" module only, with
redhatppp you may use the standard redhat tools:

if-up ppp0
if-down ppp0 

It may be that linuxconf support a syntax like

netconf --connect ppp0

but I'm not sure.
