I've thrown together a generic form letter to send out to companies
that we might be interested in helping us by providing brochures
about their Linux products/services. In addition to product brochures
from companies, I will contact OpenSource.org [did you already contact ESR
Jim?] about getting some sort of document about OpenSource that might
click with the average person. I _really_ want to stay away from
the term "free" and stick to Open Source lest we have thousands of
people thinking they can download a Linux distrot and than call the
distributors for tech support.
Does everyone agree with the idea of giving out brochures about
commerical Linux products to people or would they rather stick to
a handout we put together? If we do the whole company brochure thing,
we will need money to get all the brochures sent to all the participating
LUGs once they come to me, unless the companies themselves are willing to
directly send them to the LUGs once we have a final list. I'm not sure
if most companies would be willing to do that though. Thoughts?

Dear $name,
My name is $sender, and I am involved with the Linux Demo Day project.
The goal of the project is to organize a concurrent demonstration of
the Linux operating system to the thousands of users that may only have
heard of Linux but never seen it, and to the many users that are not
even aware that an alternative to Windows exists. We are currently
in the organizational phase of the project, and once we have some
more details worked out (end of June), we plan a large advertising
campain through banner ads, Linux magazine articles, and a press
release in hopes of getting as many LUGs involved as possible. Our
goal is to have LUGs doing demos of Linux at schools, businesses, malls,
or where ever else computer users may be. You can read more about the
project at http://www.linuxdemo.org
You have been contacted because we are looking for corporate sponsors and
we hope that $company can help us. We do not need money or equipment,
but what we need is product brochures. We would like to send brochures to
all the participating LUGs so that when people see by their demos, they
can pick these up to learn more about the Linux products that are available.
Think of it as a mini-expo, where all you have to do is provide participating
LUGs with brochures in return for exposure of your product to thousands
of possible new users.
I hope to hear from you soon,
$sender
