hi!
this is a long read..
I installed linuxconf on Suse 6.4. Heres the
experience..
1) Installed linuxconf thru yast1.05-7. Installed with
a warning about groupadds and not finding
/etc/redhat-release.
2) The problem is, i installed it from a RH cd, so
it kept on popping an error screen every time i
requested a change.Mebbe a plain vanilla linuxconf is
a better choice for this exercise.
3) I was able to add users, groups, change lilo
config,change default runlevels etc.
4) no networking on my system, so couldnt try out the
    rest.
So the conclusion :
IMHO linuxconf should run on SuSE, albeit with a
network of sym links spread out....
Reason:
SuSE supports the FHS(Filesystem Hierarchy Standard),
while RH supports FSSTND (FHS's predecessor). FSSTND
was solely for Linux, FHS widens its scope to include
other unices and BSDs.
For eg.,FHS specifies that configuration files must be
in /etc.
so, XF86Config is in /etc/X11 for RH, but in /etc for
SuSE. Both are following the standard...
How about Yast in RH?
This is an altogether different ballgame.Yast is
designed *specifically* for SuSE linux, unlike
linuxconf which is a general tool for linux.
secondly, yast is tightly integrated with SuSEConfig,
which does the actual job of keeping all config files
uptodate.Again, these files are SuSEConfig.perl ,
SuSeconfig.sendmail and so on,which means its got
nothing to do in a RH installation!
But hey...i dont have a RH system right now..mebbe
someone can try....:-)
Whew!Thats it for now..
Regards,
Kishor
