Yes, those are necessary for installing linux.

But you will have to create enough space on the HD for a linux partition,
which is formatted using ext2 file system. The best way is to empty one
partition and delete it. If that can't be done, you will have to defrag one
partition, and adjust its size so that the free space is available for a
new partition. You have to use a tool called fips present in the dosutils
folder on the CD.

Let LILO install on the MBR of your HD, don't forget to set the default
boot option.
