Is this discussion about window managers? Isn't icewm GNOME compatible? You
could continue using GNOME with icewm. AFAIK, if you are using apps like
GIMP and Gnumeric, you are still using GNOME, although the desktop would be
icewm!

You also need to look in ~/.Xclients ... mine says "exec gnome-session"
