Mail from ILUG-BOM list (Non-Digest Mode)

Hi all,

This is in response to all the posts on the ZDNET
article.

The article implied that users had already made
their choice for the desktop and it was windows.

Broadly my arg was the oft quoted reasons for non
use of other Operating Systems (ease of use,
availability of skilled pesonnel and tech
support) is not the real reason for non use. It
has more to do with vested interests within
(most) IT dept and marketing tactics of Computer
vendors.

As the case stands "Best OS" is a combination of
very many issues amongst which the above three
are a few. These three are also the issues where
MS claims leadership. There never is a mention of
various other issues (stability, security, costs,
bugfixes, scalability, customisation,
applications, effeciency....)where MS lags far
behind (the posts by other ILUGers are
indicative).

If ease of use was the issue the MAC would have
been a runaway success.
If stability was a issue Unix would be the
standard.

Availability of manpower for solving specific
issues is always a problem in a high tech
industry. Color TVs and VCRs in 1970, PCs in
1980, Copiers in 1985, Fax and laser printers in
1987. As a first mover you have to hire people
who can think and train them. Trying to hire
someone with Specific experience is as difficult
in any industry. If you've choosen Linux you have
also choosen this and there is no point in
cribbing.

If I were selling MS why should I try to sell
you Linux and cut my revenue (assuming ofcourse
that opensource is going to quietly die in the
morning). So within the computing Industry you
are never likely to be introduced to Linux as an
alternative.

Nobody said that ease of use is bad. But dumbing
a system and removing control from users is bad.

Delphi is fantastic (can't wait to get my hands
on Kylix, BTW I have a 90 day full function trial
of D5 if you want) and keeps the control with
you. So why is'nt Windows like Delphi? (instead
of Linux like Windows).

On the whole Linux is without doubt a far
superior OS than Windows and more important the
Open Source development model will ensure it's
continued growth. The issue is by how much.

Complacency?? Open source is about solving
problems (scratching your itch:-)) not about
being better than windows (what a rotten
benchmark anyway) or anybody else. As long as
somone is solving problems you will be
"noncomplacent". The only thing to learn from MS
is grabbing ideas and protecting market share.
Innovation, good design etc Microsoft??. I can't
even read between the lines.

My best OS - Linux. I have no doubts in my mind.
