I am now able to connect to the net by using wvdial and even with a
WindowMaker dock applet without having to set uid on pppd. The work around
was that I made the calling program, that is wvdial/dock applet set uid
root. And then pppd does not have problem running. Options like noauth,
lock, etc. are placed in /etc/ppp/peers/ which pppd accepts even when
running as non-root.

Wvdial uses its own way of communicating but the WindowMaker dock applet
that I use (namely yawmppp - Yet Another WindowMaker PPP) uses scripts
which it writes when it is configured. The problem is that when I try to
call and run these scripts from other script, pppd tells that I need root
priviledges to run it. The calling script is owned by root *and* setuid
root. I can't figure out why is pppd then refusing to run. What could be
the problem?

Thanks,

Rajen.
