Title: Introduction to PHP
Speaker: Amrish Chaubal, DBOIS, NCST
Venue: Lecture Theatre, NCST, Juhu

Abstract: PHP (PHP Hypertext Pre-processor) is a server-side embedded scripting
language. It works within an HTML document to allow it the capacity of generating
content on
demand. PHP was designed to work on the web and in this ambit it excels; connecting
and
querying a database is a simple task that can be handled conveniently. One of the
interesting things PHP does is handle image generation and manipulation i.e. creating
images on the fly and much more than this. The PHP engine is well optimised for the
response times needed for web applications and can even be a part of the web server
itself, improving the throughput a lot.

The topics to be covered include:

- The PHP language structure and syntax, including its data types, operators,
  statements and functions.
- The myriad of PHP modules that greatly enhance its capabilities.
- And finally, Server Side Programming.

About the Speaker: Amrish Chaubal is working in NCST as a Staff Scientist in the Data
and Knowledge Engineering Division aka DBOIS. He is primarily interested in the field
of
databases and three-tier technology like CORBA and Web Programming.
