In other news, I changed /var to use /dev/hda14 instead of being a
subdirectory of / on /dev/hdb7.

I used the RH62 installer to get a bash prompt with everything important
unmounted (took the opportunity to try a fsck, but the disks didn't like
it). Then I mounted hdb7 and hda14, and used cp -a to copy /mnt/rh/var/*
to /mnt/newvar/*.

Then I edited /mnt/rh/etc/fstab, but forgot to create a blank /var
mountpoint on hdb7. That caused various things to complain on the
subsequent reboot. syslogger hung completely, fixed by 3-fingered
salute. Luckily init was around and caught it, doing a graceful
shutdown. Back to the installer to mkdir /var.

I could probably have done it without the installer. Maybe. Next I will
try shifting /home, it's too bloody big for the / partition.

Is anyone still reading?
