Dunno about the small devices. But it has all the GUI which run on Linux
running on it too. The same X servers, everything!

And FreeBSD is pretty cool as far as packet management is concerned. I just
need to keep the ports collection uptodate. Rest all is between the two 
commands "make install" and "make deinstall".

I don't know too much, but the major difference in performance is visible
only when you have a large number of processes, and Linux's scheduler is
(supposedly) not all that good. BSD gives you much more control in this
regards .... try compiling the kernel and there's a question on how many
different users do you expect at a given time, and it compiles with
appropriate optimizations.
