hi.
imho, grep does not stand for anything.
the history behind this peculiar name is interesting.
in grand old editor of unix ed the command
g/re/p (where re : any regular exp.)
meant search globally for pattern and print line which matches.
somehow this command itself got into utility which was appropriately
called grep.
it certainly does not stand for gnu something as it predates GNU
movement.

p.s: may be i am wrong regarding this origin of word but i remember
something like this reading in unix programming : kerningan and pike.
