IIRC, Apache has had this feature for a while. I can't recall how it is
done, but can tell you when I get back to my machine. For now, if you have
gzipped files, and use lynx as a browser, it will be decompressed on the
client side. I have all my rfc's and howto's gzipped, and read them using
lynx and apache.
