When booting my system (RHL6.0 Kernel 2.2.5-15 (recompiled)), after I get
to INIT: booting ver 2.74, it waits for about 10 seconds and then I get a
message (with context):

Sep 27 12:30:29 tae kernel: Freeing unused kernel memory: 56k freed

Sep 27 12:30:29 tae kernel: Unable to load interpreter
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sep 27 12:30:29 tae kernel: NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0 for Linux NET4.0.
Sep 27 12:30:29 tae kernel: Adding Swap: 128516k swap-space (priority -1)

Does anyone know what this means?

The error occurs after the kernel loads and before rc.sysinit starts.

The rest of the boot process is smooth except for named giving a bind
error saying that the address is already in use.

Don't sweat it -- it's only ones and zeros.
