does this happen at boot up? what about windows ( if U have it
installed) ?

could be related to a power-saving setting. Few drives have a problem
with re-setting themselves after going into power-saving mode under
linux. 

IF... & only IF.. this is the case ..... use the hdparam utility ... it
has an option to disable this feature. ( if U have an older seagate hdd
... this maybe the probable cause... but its difficult to say without
more info )

if u ain't sure advise to read abt. it... or ask someone (experienced. )
to do it for you.
