Rescue-Method

when i used a resue disk to stsrt the system i got the bash prompt
the sad part was that the main partition was not mounted, on trying to mount 
the error was not enough disk space

how does one go about the whole rescue with the rescue floppy generally if 
the mistake is due to a file written incorrectly by oneself, say innittab / 
fstab etc..?
