There is such a utility in gnome and it does a wonderful job
Something like task manager in Windows NT but even better. Displays the
memory , available virtual memory , CPU usage all in runtime. Well I can
rephrase it as a multicolored and very informative 'top' command equivalent.
I use it to constantly monitor the system resources . Also there are level
classifications in which if a certain resource saturates then the color on
the guage changes to RED .. etc
The name .. System Monitor ... or something like that . Check the main menu
in gnome.
