Hi All,
As a newcomer to Linux I have faced this problem several times. Some
of my queries do not elicit a response. But I don't think that the person
sending the query appreciates not getting a response.
Now there is no way of knowing whether a person's query has been
addressed or not on a open forum like this one. My own experience is that
frequently I find that I may be able to help a person solve his problem, but
as I am still a novice I hesitate to send in answers. But, if I were to find
out that that person has not received an answer I would definitely send in
my 2 paise's worth of advice, because the other person has nothing to lose.
So there should be some method of letting the list know that I posted a
query & nobody responded. It's a policy matter I think for the List Admin to
consider.
The same problem exists on my local ilug group although on a smaller
scale. I know answering queries is a hobby kind of thing for most people. I
know Linux is definitely after hours for me. But inspite of all this I still
feel that this is not reason enough for queries not getting answered.
Well what do we do about it? Here's my 2 paise worth of advice
again. Maybe the sender could resend the message with a short form added to
the subject line, like QNA (Query Not Answered). Maybe a policy could be
formed whereby if a person does not receive a single response for a week he
could send the message again with the QNA. Like I said something for the
List Admin to consider.
Now, as a Linux newbie I have had my share of Linux trouble
including queries not being answered. But let me stress that this is not a
finger pointing exercise. May be I am rambling away because it's a Sunday
and Linux & Windows are both running fine(for a change) & I have nothing to
do. Please let me know what you think of this. Flames or otherwise welcome.
