problem with the mouse

i just got a new microsoft mouse which is perfectly working in win'98
but  it won't even move an inch under linux.i tried mouseconfig commands and 
everything still the mouse does'nt  work,and when i put my old[logitech] 
mouse the mouse starts working again.pls help me!
