you can do either of these 2 things
1)run xf86config and select the appropriate options regarding your
monitor,mouse,video card. and when you get the options for the default
resolutions at the 8,16,24 bit colors..select the option to change the
default resolutions ..u'll get an option for virtual space..this is the
option u SHOULD disable..it'll say something lie "would u like a vitrual
space bigger than the physical space?"..so select no and do the same for
16,24bit color options..u're done
2)open /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Xf86config in an editor go down to the "SCREEN"
section and
comment out the lines(place a # symbol at the begining of the line) that
says "Virtual     800 600" for eg.  for each of the color depths..( this is
important or else the change will only show in the colordepth u made the
change for)
