That's very much dependent on the Window Manager you use. I use
enlightenment 0.16.x which gives me a list of all currently open windows.
What do you use. (If I am not wrong, KDE supports it too .. the list of
windows)

In X-windows mode? There must be a button!
In KDE, you can use Alt+F2 to get an equivalent of Windows' "run", where
you can type in "xterm" (or whatever you like).

Change the /etc/inittab file to start into initlevel 3 by default.
Probably, there's a line like this.
id:5:initdefault:
Change the 5 to 3.

Hmmmm ... there is a "start" button, at exactly the same place where it
exists in Windows. But the word "start" isn't written there.
It's there by default. If it isn't, then you must have changed it. If you
have changed, then you know about it already ... ;-)
