U can still recompile the kernel to get rid of unwanted device drivers.

- what X window manager are u running ? Have u tried switching to KDE...it
should be faster.
- Disable all unecessary services that begin at boot-time. U can do this my
typing 'ntsysv' as root
- Install squid on one of the machines and point the browsers of all
machines to this machine as the proxy server. This will relieve the load on
your net connection. Of course i am assuming that u have a network.
- The higher your X window resolution and greater the depth, the slower
becomes the m/c. 800x600 at 16 bit is fine for most tasks.

Also, address some specific problem areas that you are having....

running linux 6.0 as well as 6.1 the earlier came in
chip magazine and the latter one in pcquest magazine.

the pcquest 6.1 cd comes with a kernel compiled for
586's which i imdtly installed.
