I think that may have been caused by the fact that your cd-rom is not
detected as you have said later on. This is because GNORPM tries to access
the default /mnt/cdrom/Redhat/RPMS directory every time it starts.

Did you try sndconfig?

Take a look at /var/log/messages and look for error messages regarding
driver modules. That will help

What does mount say?

You just need to mount the windows partition right. Then you can use any
editor to use the files. Use the following entries in /etc/fstab for the
windows partitions -

<device>        <mount point>   vfat    rw,conv=a,[auto,user,dev,suid,gid=,uid=]       
 0       0
where <device> is something similar to /dev/hda1
                <mount point> is the directory you must create like /mnt/c
                vfat is the file system for most Win 9* partitions unless it is FAT16
                next column is the fs specific options list that make life easier for 
all
users. The ones in the [] are optional; try 'man mount' for more details
