I had a similar problem before. Try looking at /var/log/messages. You will
probably find references to missing parport* modules. I was able to solve
the problem by adding the following line to /etc/conf.modules:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
Although my printer is detected now, I cant use it since HP 710C is not yet
supported in linux, thanks to a new proprietary protocol used by HP! :-(
