right, but that doesn't exactly answer it. It puts me on the right track
however.

I can write them in pine see --> !bang!bang!
I can't write them in irc
I can't write them in telnet (which is how I sent the mail that day using
my mail script)
I can't write them at the shell prompt either.
Looks like only pine allows it.
