Great,
I too had the same problems. Some were solved, some I learned to live with.
I am having problems with the display. The system says while
probing my display card as to the resolution the card supports is
640*480 resolution, but when i go into the genome environment all the
windows and dialogs are very big and go out of the screen, what do i
do for this.

Goto /etc/X11 and open the XF86Config file by using joe, pico or whatever you like. Goto the last section in the file. Its called monitors or something to that extent. Remove all lines in the file starting with virtual. To be on the safer side take  a backup of the file first. Keep only the resolutions you want.  This will prevent the window from going off screen. The resolution can be changed by (CTRL ALT +)or (CTRL ALT -). Chances are that one of the resolutions you give wont be supported. Youll have to change the resoultion by the above method.

In windows my display card can display resolutions upto
1024*786.What is the problem. My display card is Media GX and monitor
is samtron 40 bn,but in the monitor selection this is not listed so i
select samtron syn3.

Even I have a Samtron 40 Bn. I dont think this to be a monitor problem though. It would be better if you run xconf and give all the settings possible. This would make things better.

P.S. BTW some of my resolutions are not showing up on the screen. eg my startup takes me to a screen where the resolution is not supported ie I get a blank page. Anybody knows where I need to make changes. ie which subsection is referred to first ,. which next etc.
