why dont u load the modules of your network card from the old kernel
modules ...(against a different kernel version)
Using
insmod -f <driver_name>
it works out fine...
i use 3 kernel images on a single rh 5.2 m/c namely 2.0.36, 2.2 and 1.2.13
and kernel 1.2.13 on my slackware box for experimentation...
