i had wrote that 1600MB of SuSE Linux 6.3 could not get installed in my
2GB partition, and system hanged.

with your above "a thought", i now understand that such thing occurred.

i mean, due to 8k cluster size of ext2, it had used 8k space for much
smaller sizes, ended up consumming all 2GB much much before that size of
files were downloaded.
