The ubuntu way worked. I have my grub menu back and can boot into Linux. But 1 problem when I select to boot WinXP Grub shows the ususal meesages and again I am back into grub menu with Ubuntu selected and the time shown below in seconds as set in menu.lst Earlier I had tried in vain to repair and reinstall XP and my XP display had changed although it was working.
