my setup is much simpler than dileep's. i login to my shell server
over ssh and directly send recieve mails from there. occazionally i
fetch mails into evolution. but using fetchmail is better solution.

install mutt, postfix, and fetchmail. fetchmail will retrieve emails
from your remote pop3 server and deliver locally to postfix. You can
also install clamav, procmail, spamassassin to enable mail filtering.

Ofcourse you also need to setup your local mailsever to use your ISP's
SMTP server as a smart host for delivering email. .fetchmailrc file
and howto for enabling smarthost for postfix is available on net.
