In the past MFD units used to be prone to breakdowns, don't know about
the reliability of the current crop.

In my opinion stay away from after market refills. One botched
experience taught me to go with the original replacement even though it
costs more. The guy botched up the plate inside the cartridge, promised
that a new plate would fix it. I ended up paying for the toner and a
new plate around Rs. 1000 for printouts with a 1" wide dark grey band
"watermark" on my printouts :( - whereas a new one cost Rs. 3100.

The USP value depends on how much of each function you plan to use. Do
you send/receive a lot of faxes? Suggest you make a matrix of the
features and how much of each you will use and then decide.
