I tried the same. The errors i got were due to dependency issues e.g.
libqt3c102-mt.
Also what you downloaded was a .deb file ; you have to use dpkg to install.
e.g. dpkg -i opera_8.54-20060330.5-shared-qt_en_sarge_i386.deb
in this case.
you have to su/sudo this in a terminal.
