It need not be as big as lightning. It can be some static or leakage 
that kills the ethernet part only. I just got that mobo repaired in 
warranty after its ethernet card conked out in one of the rainiy 
sessions. Then I reconnected the cable in the other PCI card and kept 
the LAN for the on-board device.
