iRiver is not exactly a lost cause as it does support firmware upgrades.
I was able to get H340 to play .avi and divx files after firmware upgrades.
Also after installing rockbox on the player, I was able to dual boot the
player. I made a post on how to do it in easy steps.

Very nice :-) . But according to iriverindia.com, this model isn't
officially available in India! That means it's not ubiquitous - and
hence a lost cause in this context. BTW, what kind battery-life do you
get with Rockbox as compared to [original] firmware?

I would recommend the iRiver players as it is more hackable and less
proprietary compared to the iPod.
... I'll second that.
