what are you talking about? I was using gaim 1.1 till recently on my FC2
system and I've had no problems while doing anything on Y! I've
upgraded it to 1.5 and I haven't noticed any problems either...

Try changing profiles. Or using a different profile when chatting with
someone on gaim. If that was not enough there are extensions like
avatar which afaik is not handled nicely.
And regarding adding users to Y! list, gaim gave me problems. The user
was added locally and not to the server list. This might have been
handled in gaim 2.0, am not sure. But with default one that comes with
Ubuntu, I've faced this problem since hoary.
Try going stealth with gaim for selective users in gaim Y!.
Oh and did I mention that gaim somehow "buffers" the message resulting
in a text message lag. I don't have this problem with official client.
I've faced this problem in various networks and isps. And its not n/w
latency. :)

Haven't had the time to pin-point the problem and file a proper report
with gaim / libyahoo.

There are things that gaim / libyahoo can do and cannot. Above are few of them.
