NB: I am sending this to both lists since I have mixed up the threads
in both of them. The original question was asked in the
ilug-cal-discuss. This has happened entirely due to my callousness. I
hope you will understand.

Try doing this, stop your X, remove i810 (modprobe -r i810) then load
i915 (modprobe i915), start your X. See if it works. If it doesn't then
it's clearly a hardware issue. If it works, then fiddle with your
/etc/modprobe.conf and make sure it loads i915 at next boot instead of i810.

Yes it works. Interestingly my /etc/X11/xorg.conf says:
Section "Device"
       Identifier "Videocard0"
       Driver "i810"
       VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device"
EndSection

Even after modprobing the i915 driver, if I change the xorg.conf entry
from i810 to i915, X refuses to start. This was the problem I had
encountered in the past. Is it necessary to change the entry at all?

I am a Debian / Ubuntu guy. It's been a long time since I have used
anything else.

:D

PS - Debarshi, can you kindly fix your mail client (GMail?)? It creates
a new thread each time you reply. Check the list archives to confirm the
issue.

Not only that, my GMail autocompletion is also creating a lot of
problems by popping out different addresses for the same keyword at
different times. Thats no excuse, and I hope I will be able to rectify
very soon.

Cheerio,
Debarshi
