found a tweak on ubuntu forums to fix this start ubuntu in recovery mode and then enter
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and keep clicking yes till one reaches resolution and then enter simple installation. it worked. so alls well that ends well sk -- http://mm.glug-bom.org/mailman/listinfo/linuxers
