How did you upgrade from kernel 2.6.8 to 2.6.18 through apt? My dvd has
kernel 2.4 and 2.6.8 using linux26 at boot prompt. My apt did not have
higher kernels.

apt-get install linux-image-2.6-486
OR
apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686

The packages point to the latest 2.6 kernel image.

The installation also updates the grub menu.lst to include the latest
kernel. Also note that the older kernel is never removed. So you can
always revert if there's a problem.
