If you are using Ubuntu try Automatix, it will install all drivers
including win32codecs etc.
DO NOT mount VCD's when you insert them into the CDROM Drive. If you
have it on auto mount, unmount them using umount /cd/drive/path
I don't mount them. I get the video, its the sound thats absent.

PS: You could also try VLC player, but Mplayer is preferable.
VLC player gives broken sound.
