Exactly, and on the same lines everyone can decide what they want to
name their distribution. I understand that GNU doesn't force anyone,
but seems like they would probably withdraw from everything that
doesn't have the word GNU.

Absolutely. not just linux, neither would have the FSF or X.org or
Apache, or KDE. All of them have been instrumental in everybody
else's success.
Absolutely, and I guess we need to concentrate on that rather than
bicker to each other about the name (myself included ;-) )
