Which could mean that the Preferences need to be tweaked. Assuming 
that you have vlc-alsa and other plugins installed. "apt-cache search 
vlc" will tell u the available packages  and  "apt-cache --installed 
show vlc" will tel u what is installed. From that u can find out if 
anythin is missing. Also start vlc from a xterm so that you can see 
what errors it spits out.
Can you play an mp3 from vlc.
