I have used Debian Sarge and I don't recollect having to set any users for K3B for my first installation user account. In fact I have never done it in any distro that I have tested on my system. It is the additional user that does not get access and the system pops up a specific message for the same for the first time. The problem faced by the OP seems to be package-installation related.
