If the live CD fails, maybe your hardware is happy with 6.06. I faced
the same problem with my Acer. Also give Kubuntu a try. My family
protested against gnome and got me to re-install Kubuntu after I put
Edubuntu 6.06. Majority wins. :)
What are your lappy's specs?
