IBM Thinkpads do work out of the box but they're also more expensive than a

Thank you, to everyone for their inputs. I have directed the NGO lady to
this thread on the website. A dealer is even willing to lend an LG lappy
for a day for testing. So Krish and his team will be on it. Thanks again.
However, please don't go for an Acer, even though you'll get an Acer of
similar configuration to other brands for much cheaper -- and with Linux
installed. You'll regret it.
I have an Acer 2428 and it works out of the box with Kubuntu 6.06,
except for no sound in VCDs and DVDs. Open sound as well as MP3s play
well. Anyway sound was not a major criteria for buying the lappy. The
main purpose was internet, office and wireless access. I checked out the
wireless chip number before buying and it was the common 2200. Wireless
was very important.
I had bought an Acer 4061NWLCi and banged my head for three days with
kernel
compilations just to get my sound card, wireless, and ACPI working.
Apparently the DSDT on this Acer box was broken and I had to manually debug
and recompile it! (So much for pre-installed Linux!)
What is DSDT? Which distro are you using and how did you get sound up.
Can you play VCDs and DVDS with sound?
And I'm sure you want to buy a laptop that lasts. Acer build quality it
exceptionally poor.
Can you provide details for that?
Thank you for reading my Acer review. I've chosen this method to get
back at
the company.
Hmmm.
Regards,
Rony.
